Crack in a Nakiri Slicing Cleaver Knife

Fixing a Crack in a Nakiri/Slicing Cleaver Knife

During the sharpening of a small slicing cleaver in the Nakiri style, a hairline fracture on the blade was detected, signifying a potential risk to the knife’s durability. To prevent any consequential damage that could render the knife unusable, immediate action was imperative.

The repair process commenced with the careful identification and marking of the crack’s location. Grinding the blade’s edge ensued until the complete eradication of the crack. Following this, the blade was outlined, excluding about 4 millimeters for necessary adjustments in the remaining portion. A meticulous approach was taken with a stone grinding wheel to precisely remove the required material.

Transitioning to a 4×36″ belt grinder equipped with a 120 3M ceramic belt, the focus was on crafting a new profile, ensuring optimal bevel and sharpness. Subsequent refinement involved using a Chosera 1K stone to eliminate any residual belt grinder marks. The process culminated with a final polish on a buffing wheel with compound.

The success of this meticulous repair process was confirmed through a pivotal cut test, which validated the complete elimination of the crack. This rigorous repair technique effectively salvaged the knife, guaranteeing its sustained functionality and durability.
