What is a paddle strop, and what is it used for?
A paddle strop is a sharpening tool that consists of a flat, rigid base (usually wood or acrylic) with a stropping surface—typically leather, felt, or Nanocloth—mounted on top. It’s used to polish and refine the edge of a knife or tool after sharpening, removing burrs and aligning the cutting edge for maximum sharpness.
What types of materials are used on paddle strops?
Paddle strops commonly feature vegetable-tanned leather, kangaroo leather, rough or smooth cowhide, hard felt, or Nanocloth. Each material offers different levels of firmness and feedback, making them suitable for different stropping compounds and polishing stages.
Can paddle strops be used with abrasives?
Yes. Paddle strops can be used bare for maintenance or loaded with abrasive compounds such as diamond emulsions, chromium oxide, or aluminum oxide for more aggressive polishing and edge refinement.
What is a 2-sided paddle strop used for?
A 2-sided paddle strop features two stropping surfaces—one on each side of the strop. This design allows you to apply different compounds or materials on each side, making it easy to perform multi-stage stropping (e.g., coarse on one side, fine on the other) without switching tools.
Can I load both sides of a 2-sided paddle strop with different compounds?
Yes. That’s one of the main benefits. For example, you can load one side with 1µ diamond emulsion for mid-level polishing and the other with 0.25µ for final mirror finishing. Be sure to label or color-code each side to avoid cross-contamination.
