When using Shapton Fine Surfacing Compound with the Shapton Naoru Cast Iron Lapping System, it is an excellent choice to refurbish your 3 micron/4000 grit and finer Ceramic Water Stones. This is part of maintaining good stones.
Get Your Lapping Plate Ready: First, ensure that your Naoru Cast Iron Lapping Plate is clean and free from debris. You might want to apply water or some honing oil, depending on the recommendation of your system.
Add the Surfacing Compound: Spread a little amount of Shapton Fine Surfacing Compound evenly over the lapping plate either by sprinkling it or applying it with a spatula.
Lap the Stone: Position your ceramic water stone on top of the lapping plate. With very light pressure move the stone in a figure-eight pattern or consistent directions. This process helps in evening out abrasive particles and keeping your stone level.
Check for Flatness: Periodically test if your stone remains flat. You may wish to sight along its surface or also use straight edge tools. Adjust accordingly as needed.
Clean Everything Up: Once you’re done, thoroughly clean both lapping plate and water stone removing any traces of leftover compound and particles. This will help preserve tool performance and general condition maintenance.
