Rediscovering the Craft of Local Sharpening

I came across one of the last few folks doing a fading trade today – a local street sharpener working from his tricked-out motorcycle. His gear is simple yet gets the job done: a grinding wheel for fixing chips, a sandpaper flap wheel for most of the sharpening, and a seriously worn-out 2×32″ belt for the final touches.

He plugs into the power outlet at the nearby shop he’s visiting. Apart from the sharpening tools, he’s got a few bits and bobs for straightening blades and an oil stone that’s been gathering dust because nowadays, most knives have low-quality steel.

We had a great chat, talking about other sharpeners in town and how he prefers being on the move, running a one-person show without a fancy shop or employees to worry about. His journey began when his brother learned sharpening in Japan and hooked him up with the gear he’s been using ever since (that belt grinder needed a bit of coaxing to start, though).

He’s realistic about his work and its quality. Veteran sharpeners watching his technique might have a lot to critique, but he charges a nominal fee per knife and swings by every week or so. A few years back, I might’ve turned my nose up and nitpicked every mistake. But life’s taught me to be more humble and open-minded. I genuinely admired his craft, cherishing this unexpected encounter and reflecting on his role in our community today.
