The 1x4" Suehiro Gokumyo 15K grit stone is one of the highest grits in stone form from Suehiro, and it brings out a hair popping edge and mirror, not to mention a smooth slicing edge. The main purpose of this sharpening stone is to polish, but it can also be used for light touching up of otherwise intact edges. It also is a stepping stone to the Gokumyo 20K, or a leaping off point for further refinement through strops and emulsions. While the 1x4 size is meant for use with the KME sharpener, it is also a great size for a slip stone, field stone or a pocket stone for knife sharpening on the go, or to remove unwanted final burrs.

The 1x4" Suehiro Gokumyo 15K measures 1" x4" x 5mm in size and mounted on a blank. They are used with water only and work best when soaked in water for a minute or two before use. Store in a dry place in between use.

Ideal place in a sharpening progression:

  • Starting grit maintenance of an intact edge.
  • After lower polishing grit sharpening stones (5K, 6K, 8K, 10K, 12K grit)
  • Before progressing to further polishing stones and strops (20K+, 1 micron - 0.025 micron strops)
  • A final stone for full mirror polished sharpness on many knives and tools.

This stone plays well with others:

The Suehiro Gokumyo 15K sharpening stone is a premium sharpening stone that works on almost all types of knives, scissors, tools and chisels, including those made with abrasion resistant steels. On tradional carbon and stainless steels, the 15K will polish the edge to a high mirror finish. On more abrasion resistant steels, the 15K is better as a finishing and polishing grit. It will reveal lower grit scratches that have not yet been worked out. It can also be used in a mix and match progression of other synthetic and natural sharpening stones, as well with other brands such as Chosera, Shapton, Sigma, Imanishi, Spyderco, etc. The Suehiros are waterstones, and are not to be used with oil, but can be used in conjunction with oil stones (such as Norton India and other carborundum and Arkansas stones) if the blade is wiped clean before and after switching stone types.

Comparable stones by grit:

Shapton 15K, Naniwa 12K Super Stone.
