The Jende 2 sided Glass Lapping Plate is a whopping 10″ x 4″, and comes with coarse, medium, and fine Silicon Carbide lapping powders. Made from 1/2″ thick float glass, one side is etched to be used with lapping powders to flatten your stones while the other side is perfectly smooth and flat. The etched groove side is 0.5 mm deep and makes the plate much more aggressive for lapping with the lapping powders. It also allows for swarf runoff, minimizing stiction on finer grit stones. The smooth side can accommodate a half wide sheet of full sized sand paper or lapping film, and can be used as a reference plate for knives, chisels, planes.
To use the lapping side of the plate, wet the surface of the glass, but don’t pool any water. Lightly sprinkle the desired powder grit evenly across the surface. Pre soak your stones if necessary, then mark the surface of the stone with a grid pattern in pencil. Lap with even pressure using an X pattern until pencil marks are removed.
To use the reference side of the Glass Lapping Plate, cut a piece of sandpaper or lapping film to size. You can fold the sandpaper over to create a lip to secure the end under the plate. Wet/dry sandpaper and films can usually use a drop of water to adhere it to the plate sufficiently.

Don’t just keep the knives sharp and ignored the abrasives which have been working hard. The abrasives requires TLC just like all the working blades and need to be in good shape for the next job. The lapping plate and its magic powder works like a charm. I have all my whetstone flattened before a hot cup of coffee turn warm.
